I love when you meet someone and you effortlessly connect with them. That's exactly how I felt talking to Eveline first over zoom, and then in person. I knew instantly that she was just a sweet, loving human being. A great mama with a heart of gold. I couldn't wait to meet her family!
I was so appreciative that she was up to try my wild idea of shooting her session at sunrise. It's an incredible thing, having toddlers, because they get you up long before the crack of dawn sometimes, and we decided to use that to our advantage. We picked a weekend before her due date, and crossed our fingers and toes that the weather would hold up. It didn't disappoint!
We had met up the week prior so she could try on her dress, and I am so proud to say that I styled this shoot and helped curate a look that was both warm (because the wind was blowing 50km/hr and it was chilly!) and also really comfortable too! This was the first shoot that I've ever been so hands on about the styling, and I absolutely loved making this part of the process easy for Eveline and her family.
This is what photographers dream about
Early Sunday morning she excitedly texted me letting me know they were on their way to meet me at this unique location. I had loaded up my truck with blankets for her son Micah and hubby Frank, and extra shawls and sweaters for Eveline. I was so nervous and excited at the same time. Not only was this the first time I'd been so involved in styling a family, this was also my first time ever shooting at sunrise. I hoped I had gotten the timing right, and that everything was going to come together how I envisioned.
When Eveline and family arrived, I breathed a sigh of relief. They had made it, the sun was just lifting over the horizon, and although it was windy, they were all so easy going and up for it! Our session was honestly what photographers dream about.
Micah was absolutely attached to his dad, who he called "papa" which I think may be the cutest thing I've ever actually heard. He wanted to hug him and love on him and just be near him. I was so thrilled to photograph that beautiful bond, it only added another level of love to this session.
You can see that family dynamic begin to shift
I truly think when you stop for a moment, in all the chaos that is being pregnant while raising your toddler, you can feel that love growing and building. You can see that family dynamic beginning to shift, you can honest-to-goodness feel each family member's heart growing in preparation for all the love that this family is going to shower on their newest member. It's an absolutely sacred and beautiful thing to witness and something I felt honoured to photograph.
As we progressed through our session, Micah started warming up to me, and the weather, and was happy to go on a search for birds and deer. I couldn't help but think to myself that one day he would have a best friend, a little sibling, to go on that search with him, and maybe one day I'd be photographing the two of them together doing that same activity.
Hanging out with Eveline and Frank during this transitional moment in their lives really reminded me of my own journey being pregnant with my second son. So Eveline and Frank if you're reading this, I can't even begin to explain to you how your lives are going to change, and how your hearts are going to double in size when your little one arrives, but it's a beautiful change that's just around the corner. I am so grateful to you both for allowing me to photograph your family while in the midst of all this change, so that you can look back on this fleeting time in your lives, and remember this 'excited, can't wait to meet you baby, can't wait to see where this life takes us' feeling, forever.
